The involuntary treatment bill that the county supported, SB 1257, stalled in committee last legsilative session because there was so much other less productive “legislation” careening toward the governor’s desk to promote the freedom caucus narrative that she vetoes everything. Hopefully that bill gets another chance this year because I believe it will pass this time around.

Or perhaps it didn't pass due to staunch opposition from civil rights groups and behavioral health experts who pointed out the blatant violation of due process and the likelihood that it would increase overdose deaths.

That could certainly be the case. I hadn’t heard that before, although I see your point.

All of these public officials should go to an AA, CA, or any 12 step program once a week for say, 6 months. Go to open meetings. One hour a week. There’s one near you all day and night. Listen to the people who have gone through treatment, relapsed, been successful, they keep going to meetings. AA or other programs is the only place that doesn’t want your money they need you to listen, just a thought. Has anyone ever tried it?

I agree but happen to know people that were in that room who had lost family members to drug abuse They've spoken about it openly, and the pain they are in today from their loss.

In another life, I worked with people with SUDs and not every 12 program is open to visits from people who want to observe - although I can't think of a better place to learn about what it is like to struggle with addiction.

That’s right. Make certain it’s an open meeting. Should say so on the app., Rocking Horse. I’m glad the city and county are trying to play well together.

Perhaps peace and movement in the correct direction is far more important than fantasies of final solutions.

I agree, Dave.

My concern - and possibly part of my role as journalist- is letting some elected announce success early on with these meetings.

The real work is ahead of us.

Excellent journalism, Joe. I think that is what I was trying to say, Walking stepping stones in the right direction is success. As an aside, I don't think there are enemies on either the City Council or the County Board of Supervisors. Unlike some politicians, they are willing to meet and talk. It's what the world needs.
