Welcome to the first quiz on our new publishing platform!

You’ll notice a few differences right off the bat.

First, this isn’t just a quiz. It’s kind of like a quirky take on our daily “In Other News” section. When you answer each question, you’ll see a “Continue” button appear. Click on that button and it’ll take you to a reliable news source for background on the answer.

Second, you can add your two cents when you get the answers. Feel free to jot down whatever you like!

Third, we’re opening the quiz up to all subscribers, not just paid subscribers.

And, since this is our first foray into Beehiiv quizzes, please let us know if you have ideas about how to do them better.

Enjoy!

Why is Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos the right answer to every question in this quiz?

Because he's in the middle of the biggest political fight of his career.

And that fight shifted against him yesterday.

A memo from County Administrator Jan Lesher showed the results of an independent administrative investigation into Nanos' decision to suspend his political rival in the 2024 election, Republican candidate Lt. Heather Lappin.

The county tasked Northstar Employment and Legal Solutions with determining whether Nanos was bullying or retaliating against Lappin when he suspended her just a few weeks before the general election.

The investigation found that a preponderance of evidence did not support a finding that Nanos was bullying Lappin.

But the investigation did find that a preponderance of evidence showed Nanos violated ethics rules, including that Nanos “used his authority and department resources for political gain.”

“The evidence includes considering Lt. Lappin’s political campaign in investigation and disciplinary decision making, culminating in issuing a press release that included information obtained in his capacity as Sheriff,” the memo states.

And the investigation found a preponderance of evidence shows Nanos violated code of conduct rules.

"By including confidential information in a press release about the reasons he placed Lt. Lappin on paid administrative leave for political gain, he did not maintain rules about courtesy and civility,” the memo states.

However, the memo also notes “the Sheriff is not subject to these policies as an Elected Official.”
